4 compressed air trends to watch out for

Technology is evolving at a fast pace and the way we think about energy is changing with it. How does this affect compressed air? To gain perspective, we got in touch with compressed air specialist Hakan Yigittas, owner of Turkish company Yigittaslar Endustriyel Filtrasyon Ve Basincli. Here are four compressed air trends you need to watch out for in the next five years.

Mr. Hakan Yigittas

Trend 1: compressed air is the future

Mr. Yigittas predicts there will be a growing demand for compressed air and energy monitoring systems, such as VPVision. As energy costs have been rising recently, consumers and suppliers are starting to pay closer attention to them. This is where compressed air comes in, as it is often the 3rd or 4th utility in the manufacturing industry. Companies are looking at ways to reduce costs and save energy. This trend of energy savings is supported by international climate agreements and local legislation (such as the European Energy Directive and the Paris and Glasgow agreements). Companies can increase efficiency and save energy relatively quickly by using energy monitoring systems. So, you could argue that compressed air is the future.

Trend 2: remote energy monitoring

Automation is becoming increasingly relevant. Industry 4.0. is happening and more and more companies are joining. Mr. Yigittas thinks it is a given that energy monitoring will be automated. This topic has become extra relevant during the pandemic. People had to work from home and still wished to see their compressed air line. Automated energy monitoring systems (such as VPVision) make this possible with remote monitoring capabilities. Mr. Yigittas predicts this trend will continue once the pandemic is over. After all, going to the plant in person and checking system KPIs manually takes a lot more time. Automation and remote monitoring increase efficiency in every way.

Trend 3: the complete solution

Companies are asking for complete solutions. After all, energy management can be complex. It is easiest to outsource all of that to just one supplier. That means not just delivering the actual product, but also taking care of the installation and maintenance, as well as actively sharing ideas for energy savings. Suppliers can distinguish themselves through expertise and collaborative client relations. Standing out is necessary, because Mr. Yigittas expects the compressed air savings market will only get bigger. “Twenty years ago, nobody checked their compressors to see how much kilowatts were used to produce one cubic meter of compressed air. Now, everyone wants to learn.”

Trend 4: from mechanical engineer to energy manager

The trend towards energy savings also has an impact on jobs. Mr. Yigittas: “Many years ago, we were getting in touch with the mechanical engineers in the factory. Now we are having much more meetings with the energy managers and energy engineers in the company.” Those job titles did not even exist ten years ago. The importance of these jobs is only increasing in the wake of governmental regulations. More and more people in the company will be involved with energy management, from Engineering to Research & Development. After all, companies now have to answer for their energy spending. “The next five years will be very interesting.”
